Germany in the EUDI ecosystem

Germany's wallet, the national wallet in development under the BMI and SPRIND, is currently being tested in a limited access playground.

Under the eIDAS 2.0 regulation, every EU member state must offer its citizens a European Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet. Germany is developing its national wallet under the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI) and SPRIND, building on the country's established eID scheme delivered through the national identity card (Personalausweis) and the AusweisApp.

The German EUDI Wallet is available as a public sandbox with person identification data (PID) as the main credential focus. Relying Parties can submit a participation request to gain access to the sandbox to test their use case. With Paradym you can verify the German PID over OpenID4VC, so your integration is ready when the national wallet reaches production.

Common questions

How does the EUDI Wallet work in Germany?

Under the eIDAS 2.0 regulation, Germany must offer its citizens a European Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet. Germany is building this national wallet as an official public project led by SPRIND with federal partners. It builds on the country's long-standing eID scheme, which today is delivered through the national identity card (Personalausweis) and the AusweisApp, with PID as the first major credential focus.

Can I verify German EUDI Wallet credentials with Paradym today?

Yes. Paradym supports verification flows for EUDI-style credentials and has tested with the German wallet. However, end-to-end testing with the national wallet can only be achieved through participation in the German EUDI sandbox. You can reach out to us if you want to discuss joint sandbox participation.

Can I issue credentials to the German Wallet?

Paradym can issue standards-compliant EUDI credentials today, but those credentials cannot currently be issued into the German national wallet through a public production integration. Once Germany opens its issuer ecosystem as part of its EUDI rollout, Paradym's issuance APIs can be used to issue credentials to Germany's wallet, subject to any national onboarding, trust framework, and certification requirements.

Does the German EUDI Wallet support a mobile driving licence?

Germany's current public wallet focus is on person identification data (PID). A mobile driving licence credential is not yet generally available, but Paradym can support the relevant EUDI-style credential flows as Germany adds supported credential types.

Is the German EUDI Wallet compliant with eIDAS 2.0?

The German EUDI Wallet is being developed to meet the eIDAS 2.0 regulation and the EU's Architecture and Reference Framework. As Germany builds on its existing eID scheme and AusweisApp, the new wallet is intended to be interoperable across EU member states and fully eIDAS 2.0 compliant once it reaches production.
